Vispring mattresses

Vispring mattresses are handcrafted in Devon by the makers who invented the pocket spring in 1901. Each one is built on hand-nested pocket springs in breathable cotton calico, then layered with natural fillings such as British wool, silk and cashmere. Choose the Heybrook or the Hartley in double, king size, super king or emperor, in the tension that suits the way you sleep. Heybrook or Hartley?

We stock two Vispring mattresses, the Heybrook and the Hartley. The Heybrook has over 1,400 calico pocket springs in a double, with more than 2,800g of natural fillings layered by hand. South American horsetail, Shetland wool, Mulberry silk and mohair work with the springs for responsive support and pressure relief. A Nordic Steel contrast border finishes it.

The Hartley is built on a double layer of pocket springs, with over 1,800 in a double, for enhanced support and long-lasting stability. Its fillings blend British fleece wool, cotton, bamboo, cashmere, silk, alpaca and Shetland wool, all beneath an elegant damask cover.

Sizes and dimensions

Both mattresses come in double, king size, super king and emperor. A double measures 135cm by 190cm and a king size 150cm by 200cm. A super king measures 180cm by 200cm, and an emperor 200cm by 200cm. Every size is 23cm deep. Spring counts run from 1,440 in the Heybrook double to 2,720 in the Hartley super king, and each product page shows the count for its size.

The 30-year warranty

Vispring backs both mattresses with a 30-year warranty. The warranty does not cover a mattress used on a slatted base without a Vispring Wool Mattress Pad, and other exclusions apply. Rotating your mattress, as described below, helps the fillings wear evenly over the years.

Using a slatted bed base

Both mattresses have an integrated spring insulator pad, so they perform on a slatted bedstead or a sprung base. On a slatted base, add a Vispring Wool Mattress Pad between the slats and the mattress. The warranty does not cover a mattress used on slats without one.

Caring for your mattress

Brush the surface gently rather than vacuuming it, because the suction can displace the natural fillings inside and snag the tufts. Leave a new mattress uncovered for its first 24 hours, then use a mattress protector to guard against moisture, dust mites and allergens. Louise Silver, our Product Technologist, covers cleaning in more detail in our mattress care guide.

Delivery

Each Vispring mattress is made to order, and we deliver it free to the room of your choice on all orders to mainland England, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Wight.

What is a Vispring Mattress?

A Vispring mattress is a pocket sprung mattress made by hand in Devon from natural materials. Vispring invented the pocket spring in 1901 and now makes 74 distinct spring types. Each vanadium steel spring is hand-nested in its own cotton calico pocket, and the border is side-stitched. The calico lets air move through the mattress, which helps to regulate your temperature through the night.

Which tension should you choose?

The range covers soft, medium, firm and very firm. In king size and super king, you can also choose a split tension mattress, with a different tension on each side. In super king, there is also a zip and link mattress made in two sections that join together. The emperor comes as a zip and link mattress, so each side can have its own tension. Our mattress firmness guide explains how each tension feels.

How much does a Vispring mattress cost?

The price depends on the model and the size you choose, and you will find the price of each size on this page. Every Vispring mattress is made to order. You can spread the cost with interest free credit over 10 or 20 months, subject to status

Should you flip or rotate it?

Rotate your mattress every one to two weeks for the first few months so the fillings settle evenly, then every three to four months after that. Only turn it over if it is double-sided, and ask someone to help with the larger sizes. If you have a zip and link mattress, separate the two sections and rotate each one on its own.

Where can you try one?

The best way to choose is to try one. Visit one of our stores, or book an appointment with our team for a full mattress consultation.
